Philip Fearnside, an American researcher and authority on the Amazon, has been recognized for 50 years of field research in the rainforest. An event was held at the National Institute for Amazonian Research (INPA) to honor his work.
Fearnside has calculated the costs associated with the loss of the Amazon and has spoken out against projects, such as repaving the BR-319 highway, warning they could lead to significant deforestation. His research, including pioneering measurements of forest-atmosphere gas exchange, has made him a prominent figure in understanding the Amazon’s environmental dynamics.
