NOAA grant cuts reduce climate resilience funding in US

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has significantly reduced federal funding for climate resilience projects. As of September 2, NOAA awarded 229 grants, a 74% decrease compared to the average of 891 grants by this date in previous years.

At least 26 existing grants were terminated, including $1.2 million for the New Orleans Community Support Foundation intended for climate-resilient water management for vulnerable communities. Funding was also cut for the University of Washington’s Northwest Climate Resilience Collaborative, impacting projects with rural and tribal communities focused on adaptation to extreme heat, drought, and sea level rise.
