Nepal is seeking climate justice and has filed an initial $20 million claim from the UN Loss and Damage Fund following devastating floods on August 26, 2026. The disaster resulted in over 1,300 deaths, with more than 5,000 people still missing. Hydropower projects, roads, bridges, homes, and cross-border trade routes sustained damage.
The floods were triggered by a glacier and rock-ice collapse in the Langtang Lirung region, causing a torrent of debris and water through several river systems. Nepalese officials stated the disaster demonstrates the disproportionate effect of climate change on vulnerable developing countries. Nepal’s Foreign Minister called for international support to be framed as climate justice. The Prime Minister is expected to discuss climate-vulnerable countries at the United Nations on September 24, 2026.
