Countries have agreed to negotiate a global treaty to address environmental crime. This development occurred at the 13th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime.
By an 83-to-12 vote, governments supported establishing a committee to design the protocol. The treaty will target illegal trade in wildlife and timber, illicit mining and trafficking in minerals, and waste trafficking. Opposition from countries like the United States, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, and Iran was overcome.
