Massive Glacier Collapse Triggers Devastating Flood in Nepalese Himalayas

A significant geological event occurred on August 26, 2023, when a 600-meter wide section of an unnamed glacier on the north slope of Langtang Lirung collapsed. The collapse took place at an elevation of 5,200 meters, just above the Lhende Khola on the Nepal-Tibet border.

Initial assessments suggest the collapse mobilized approximately 142 million cubic meters of ice, rock, sediments, and debris. This mass plunged 1,100 meters to the valley floor, generating energy comparable to a 5.2-magnitude earthquake. The resulting flood inundated river valleys along the Nepal-Tibet border and impacted multiple districts downstream in Nepal.
