The Starmus Festival has established a new award in honor of conservation icon Jane Goodall. Christiana Figueres, former executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, has been named the first recipient of the Jane Goodall Earth Medal.
Figueres, recognized for her role in the Paris climate agreement negotiations, will receive the medal at the Starmus Festival in Tenerife, Spain, from Oct. 17-22. Astrophysicist and Starmus co-founder Garik Israelian noted that the medal’s idea came from the festival’s advisory board, which includes Brian May and Peter Gabriel.
