Indian tribunals address environmental violations by rail project and paper mills

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has called out the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and other agencies for insufficient information on the restoration of Chopra Gadhera, a freshwater stream damaged during a rail project in Uttarakhand.

The NGT also addressed the illegal waste disposal by paper mills in Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh, where waste including plastic and e-waste is allegedly being burnt or stored near a village. The tribunal has issued notices to the paper mills and relevant authorities, with the next hearing scheduled for December 9, 2026.

Separately, the NGT directed the Municipal Corporation of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, to ensure the rejuvenation of a waterbody in Kathula Gauspur village in accordance with environmental norms. The corporation was instructed to file a detailed project report for the rejuvenation efforts.
