Indian communities protest new fishmeal factory over pollution and danger concerns

A company named Marine Impex Pvt. Ltd. proposed constructing a new fishmeal processing plant in Cuncolim, India, which would process at least 2,400 metric tons of fishmeal monthly. The proposal generated significant opposition from local environmental advocates and politicians.

Concerns include intense stench from existing plants, described as “foul air” that impacts breathing. Between 2018 and 2024, at least 30 Indian fishmeal plants faced environmental violations and legal infractions, including waste dumping and tax evasion.
