The government of French Polynesia has announced a substantial expansion of its ocean protection measures. This initiative designates a larger portion of the nation’s waters as marine protected areas.
With this expansion, 30% of French Polynesia’s waters will now be fully protected. This means that extractive industries, including seabed mining and industrial fishing, will not be permitted within these expanded zones.
This move represents a significant step forward in safeguarding marine ecosystems. The decision follows similar conservation efforts initiated in recent times, highlighting a growing commitment to ocean health. Last year, on June 8, French Polynesia, a French overseas territory, had already established the Tainui Atea marine protected area, setting a precedent for further conservation actions.
