Everest Base Camp human activity melts thousands of tons of glacier ice

A new study analyzing the human footprint at Everest Base Camp (EBC) has quantified the impact of human activities on the Khumbu Glacier. Researchers examined energy consumption from cooking, heating, and electricity, as well as the heat generated by human waste.

During the spring 2023 climbing season, approximately 1,600 tents at EBC consumed significant amounts of LPG, kerosene, and gasoline. Coupled with the heat from an estimated 6,000 liters of urine released daily onto the glacier, the total thermal energy released was calculated to be about 849,174 megajoules. This is equivalent to melting roughly 2,492 tons of glacier ice and snow.
