El Niño’s strengthening may worsen East and South African hunger

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reports that El Niño, a climate pattern involving unusually warm Pacific waters, is already underway and strengthening. It is expected to continue through February 2027, with the strongest phase anticipated in December. Regional forecasters predict a 90% chance of heavier-than-usual rain between October and December 2026 in southern Ethiopia, central to southern Somalia, and northeastern Kenya. This excessive rainfall could lead to flooding, crop destruction, and disease spread, impacting health services and worsening food insecurity. International aid organizations are already observing food shortages in areas like southern Madagascar. Funding cuts are also reducing aid for malnutrition treatment and causing the closure of health facilities in Somalia.
