Earth’s Life Support Systems Are Red-Flagged, 2026 Planetary Health Check Warns

Human activities are continuing to erode the planet’s stability, resilience, and life-support functions, as detailed in the third edition of the Planetary Health Check. The report highlights that seven out of the nine planetary boundaries have been transgressed, with pressure on these boundaries increasing.

Last year, ocean acidification became the seventh boundary to exceed safe limits. This adds to already transgressed boundaries including climate change, biosphere integrity, novel entities, freshwater, land use change, and biogeochemical flows. The stratospheric ozone depletion boundary remains stable, though its recovery has plateaued. Atmospheric aerosol loading risk is declining globally, but is worsening regionally in South Asia.
