During recent floods in Nepal, a decentralized, community-based warning system successfully alerted people to an impending flood, allowing for timely evacuation of students from Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School. This system worked reliably when a state-run system, relying on sensors and SMS messages, failed.
Despite the success of community warnings for some, the floods have resulted in significant loss of life and displacement. As of September 3, Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported 1,252 deaths, 4,216 missing people, and approximately 1.6 million affected across five districts. Communication researchers noted that while some areas received no information, others received data that lacked urgency and scale.
