China’s Chang’e-7 Mission to Seek Water Ice on Moon’s South Pole

China is preparing to launch its Chang’e-7 lunar mission, designed to explore permanently shadowed craters on the Moon’s South Pole for water ice. This mission will utilize a unique combination of an orbiter, lander, rover, and a specialized hopper.

The hopper is engineered to navigate challenging terrain and descend into deep craters where sunlight never reaches, overcoming obstacles that conventional rovers cannot. The mission aims to identify the location, form, and concentration of lunar water ice, marking a shift towards assessing the Moon’s resource utility.

This endeavor contrasts with NASA’s approach, which focuses on developing a commercial lunar payload services program to contract lunar deliveries and technology demonstrations.
