A recent expedition has comprehensively surveyed the deep waters of Trinidad and Tobago, filling significant gaps in knowledge about the nation’s marine environment. Scientists deployed remotely operated vehicles and other technology to explore areas deeper than recreational scuba diving can reach.
The monthlong survey, which concluded on July 28, documented numerous active cold seeps and species believed to be new to science. Approximately 13% of the country’s marine territory was mapped during the expedition, which was led by deep-sea ecologist Diva Amon, a native of Trinidad and Tobago.
