Rising sea levels due to climate change could result in significant economic losses for Australia by 2100, according to a recent study. Researchers estimate potential economic losses of $855 billion under a moderate emissions scenario.
The study analyzed the potential impact of sea level rise and storm surges, projecting damage to approximately 268,000 properties and 2 million hectares of land. Under a high-emissions scenario, these losses could escalate to $1.91 trillion, affecting nearly 720,000 properties and 3.7 million hectares of coastal land. The majority of Australians live within 50 kilometers of the coastline, which stretches for roughly 34,000 kilometers.
