Grantees of the Amazon Fund fear a potential new funding freeze following Brazil’s election. The fund, established in 2008 with initial donations from Norway and Germany, supports projects aimed at reducing Amazonian deforestation and benefiting local communities.
During the presidency of Jair Bolsonaro, environmental frameworks were dismantled and Amazon Fund contributions were frozen. Upon returning to the presidency in January 2023, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva revived the fund’s operations. However, some projects, like one supporting babassu coconut breakers in Tocantins, faced an almost 10-year hold and are now worried about future funding stability.
