UN Report: Global Warming Exceeds Paris Accord Limit, Overshoot Strategy Recommended

The United Nations acknowledges that global warming impacts are unavoidable, as the planet will soon exceed the temperature threshold set by the 2015 Paris climate accord. A report released by the United Nations Environment Programme proposes an “overshoot” strategy.

This approach focuses on limiting the extent of warming and subsequently reducing temperatures. Key actions include significant reductions in fossil fuel consumption and the development of methods for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The report anticipates decades of increased disasters, rising sea levels, and extinctions as a consequence of exceeding the limit.
