Satellites now track remote whale strandings, scientists report

Scientists are using high-resolution satellite imagery to track whale strandings in remote locations, according to new research. This technology allows for the identification of different whale species by observing flippers and flukes in the water.

The method was notably tested following a mass stranding event in southern Patagonia, Chile, in 2015, where 337 sei whales died. Satellite images revealed the stranding occurred at least two months before the whales were discovered, highlighting the effectiveness of remote monitoring.
