Thirteen white-lipped peccaries were reintroduced to Piedras Blancas National Park in Costa Rica after being transported by boat across the Golfo Dulce. The peccaries were captured on the Osa Peninsula, where the species still exists in strong numbers.
The white-lipped peccary population was wiped out in Piedras Blancas National Park roughly 18 years ago due to hunting. The reintroduction aims to restore the peccaries’ role in shaping the park’s ecosystem.
