More than 380 coastal UNESCO World Heritage Sites may be at risk from climate change impacts, according to new high-resolution data. The dataset, developed by coastal engineer Robert Nicholls and colleagues, includes 386 locations that encompass cultural landmarks, biocultural sites, ecosystems, and geological marvels.
The database covers over 235 million hectares and is designed as a tool for local authorities to assess vulnerabilities and improve the resilience of these significant sites against climate change and other weather-related threats, such as erosion. Nicholls noted the surprising number of heritage sites located within coastal zones.
