A comprehensive study analyzing 37 years of monitoring data from seven major river systems flowing to the Great Barrier Reef reveals improvements in water quality, particularly in dissolved inorganic nitrogen and suspended sediment.
These improvements occurred in bursts, often coinciding with shifts in rainfall, cyclones, land use, and farming practices. Synthetic fertilizer use has decreased by up to half since its peak, yet crop yields have not declined, indicating farmers are managing to reduce pollution without sacrificing productivity.
While encouraging, the study notes that nitrogen and sediment levels in many rivers still exceed thresholds suitable for healthy coastal ecosystems. These findings suggest management efforts are having an impact, and future efforts are worthwhile.
