India has achieved the status of the world’s second-largest producer of aquatic animals. The country’s contribution to global output reached 9 percent in the year 2024.
Furthermore, India has taken the lead in inland water catches, with a reported output of 2.2 million tonnes. This positions the nation at the forefront of freshwater fisheries.
In aquaculture, India also holds a strong second position globally. It accounts for 12 percent of the total farmed aquatic animal output.
However, the report from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) also issued a warning regarding declining sustainability within the sector. This raises important questions about the long-term health of aquatic ecosystems and fishing practices.
