A recent study is employing artificial intelligence to understand and counter the operations of marine wildlife traffickers. The research focuses on “thinking how traffickers think” to proactively detect and prevent illegal smuggling of protected species.
This innovative approach gained practical relevance following an incident in Argentina. On Sunday, April 26, officials at an airport near Buenos Aires intercepted a significant shipment. The cargo contained a large number of dead and dying marine animals, including fish, octopuses, and crabs.
Authorities had to respond by expanding capacity at a national rescue center. Ten new emergency tanks were installed to provide care for the surviving animals. This interception marked the third such significant seizure within the past year, underscoring the ongoing challenge of illegal wildlife trade.
