Human activities are intensifying the pressure on the global ocean, leading to what UN Secretary-General António Guterres has characterized as a “deepening crisis.”
These escalating concerns are thoroughly documented in the third United Nations World Ocean Assessment. The report, released on June 8, was compiled by approximately 600 experts hailing from 86 different countries.
The assessment details the multifaceted challenges facing marine ecosystems. These include widespread pollution, the detrimental impacts of overfishing, and the escalating effects of climate change, all contributing to the precarious state of the world’s oceans.
Despite the dire warnings regarding the ocean’s health, the report also acknowledges progress in the realm of ocean governance. This suggests that while the challenges are significant, efforts are underway to manage and protect these vital marine environments more effectively.
