Kyrgyzstan Establishes Large Climate-Ready Corridor for Snow Leopards

Kyrgyzstan has officially designated a significant expanse of its high-altitude terrain as a protected corridor. This initiative is specifically designed for the conservation of snow leopards and other mountain-dwelling wildlife.

The Ak Ilbirs ecological corridor, formalized in 2025, covers an area approaching 800,000 hectares, equivalent to approximately 2 million acres. Its planning explicitly incorporated considerations for the future climate, as reported by Mongabay’s Liz Kimbrough.

This newly established corridor serves to connect several existing protected areas. The intention behind this connectivity is to create a more resilient habitat for the species that rely on these mountain ecosystems.
