Kashmir’s Growing Glacial Lakes Pose Flood Risk, Locals Unwarned

A recent study from the University of Kashmir has revealed a serious concern regarding the rapid expansion of glacial lakes in the region. These lakes are becoming increasingly vulnerable to outburst floods, posing a significant threat to the surrounding areas.

The expanding water bodies endanger buildings, bridges, and even a critical hydropower plant. Despite the growing risks, residents and shepherds living downstream have not received any official warnings. There is also a reported absence of evacuation plans or vital information communicated in their local languages by the relevant authorities.

This situation underscores a critical gap in disaster preparedness and communication, leaving communities exposed to the potential impacts of glacial lake outburst floods. The study emphasizes the urgent need for authorities to address this information deficit and implement effective warning systems for the vulnerable populations.
