A substantial harmful algal bloom (HAB) in Australia, identified as the largest and most prolonged on record, is continuing to inflict damage one year after its initial appearance.
The affected area is situated in Port Hughes, a coastal community located northwest of Adelaide, along the Great Southern Reef. This reef stretches across Australia’s southern coastline and is traditionally a vibrant ecosystem, supporting a diverse array of coral, bivalve, and fish species.
The harmful algal bloom was first detected in late March, marking the beginning of a persistent environmental challenge for the region’s marine life and delicate ecological balance.
