A golf-ball sized, short-armed blue octopus discovered during a deep-sea expedition in the Galapagos in 2015 has now been confirmed as a new species. Scientists announced the findings in a recent study, formally identifying the octopus as Microeledone galapagensis.
The new species was initially sighted using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). This initial observation occurred near an underwater mountain at a depth of approximately 1,773 meters (5,800 feet).
