Global Sand Depletion Threatens Ecosystems, UN Report Warns

The global sand mining industry extracts approximately 50 billion metric tons of material annually. This rate of removal significantly outpaces the natural replenishment of sand through geological processes.

According to a report by the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP), global sand demand is projected to increase by 45% by the year 2060. This escalating demand poses a substantial environmental challenge.

The slow geological processes responsible for weathering and sand formation cannot keep pace with the current extraction rates. This imbalance threatens ecosystems and resource availability.
