A new roadmap from the COP30 Presidency urges countries to develop national plans to decrease fossil fuel consumption, boost cleaner energy sources, and restructure fossil fuel-dependent economies. The roadmap seeks to translate the commitment to transition away from fossil fuels, agreed at COP28, into practical actions.
India has announced it will not sign the 35-by-35 Global Electrification Pledge, promoted by Türkiye’s incoming COP31 Presidency. This pledge aims to increase electricity’s share of global final energy consumption to 35% by 2035. India reiterated its opposition to the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, citing national economic interests, and called for greater international climate finance for developing countries.
The voluntary COP30 roadmap acknowledges varying national capacities and highlights the need for energy efficiency, electrification, renewable energy expansion, and economic diversification. It also notes that disruptions to fossil fuel supply routes have exposed importing countries to shortages and higher prices. Researchers and campaigners have called for clearer commitments on financing and implementation for the fossil fuel transition.
