A report by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) and Down To Earth (DTE) indicates that India experienced extreme weather events on 86 to 99 percent of days each year between January and September from 2022 to 2026. This frequency translates to a disaster on almost a daily basis.
Over this five-year period, extreme weather events claimed 16,303 lives, with a significant majority of these fatalities occurring between 2024 and 2026. Additionally, at least 20.6 million hectares of cropped area were impacted, with the highest damage recorded in 2025. The report also highlights shifts in seasonal patterns, including warmer winters, earlier heatwaves, and increasing agricultural losses during the pre-monsoon season.
