Brazilian officials suspended for threatening to poison Indigenous water supply

Two public servants in the municipality of Tacuru, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, have been suspended after allegedly sending WhatsApp messages threatening to poison the water supply of the Guarani-Kaiowá Indigenous people. These actions followed the reelection of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Activists stated that the 20-day suspension and initiation of disciplinary proceedings are insufficient to address violence against Indigenous communities. The officials reportedly made statements including, “we have to [put] poison in the water. Kill those pests in the water.” The case is under investigation by the Federal Police and the Federal Public Ministry.
