In Mexico’s Alvarado Lagoons System, biologists are employing novel methods to restore degraded mangrove forests. A project led by the nonprofit REVIVE combines ancient Aztec agricultural techniques with the introduction of Morelet’s crocodiles to create a fully restored ecosystem.
Mexico has experienced significant mangrove loss, and many restoration projects struggle to establish mature forests. This initiative utilizes Aztec-inspired planting methods and crocodiles, which are believed to help maintain the restored areas. According to REVIVE, this approach has resulted in a fully restored forest, with conservationists hoping this success inspires similar projects elsewhere.
