Citizen scientists map Pune’s trees for urban greening initiatives

Citizen scientists in Pune, India, are actively mapping the city’s trees to support greening initiatives. Volunteers gather on weekends in urban riparian zones, equipped with measuring tapes and smartphones.

The grassroots movement, Pune River Revival, organizes these tree mapping exercises. The group formed in response to a large urban redevelopment plan along the Mula-Mutha rivers, which aims to create promenades, recreational spaces, and infrastructure.

Volunteers began systematic tree mapping in 2024, improving their documentation techniques from earlier manual efforts. The volunteers aim to explore and document trees within the city’s riverbank areas.
