Residents of Pamarawan village, Philippines, have implemented a nature-based coastal defense project to combat recurring floodwaters. The village, located in Malolos City, was previously vulnerable to strong waves from the southwest monsoon and typhoons, even with a concrete breakwater.
The new defense system utilizes locally sourced materials, including bamboo poles, oyster shells, and coconut husks, to construct interlocking cribs covering 14 hectares off the coast. These bamboo structures, combined with discarded oyster shells placed in coconut husk nets, function as breakwaters designed to reduce incoming wave energy and protect the village from tidal waves and storm surges.
