National Green Tribunal addresses district survey reports and riverbed construction

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has set aside the District Survey Reports for Basti and Shamli districts in Uttar Pradesh. The tribunal noted that for Basti, no replenishment study was conducted before the report’s preparation. In Shamli’s case, a conducted replenishment study was not presented to the State Level Expert Appraisal Committee and State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) when the report was approved.

The NGT also directed the formation of a joint committee to investigate allegations of unauthorized structures and camping facilities by Balason Blues Resort and Camping on the Balason riverbed in Darjeeling district, West Bengal. The committee is tasked with examining the ecological impact and statutory consent violations.

Separately, the NGT is seeking responses from authorities regarding a complaint of illegal construction of a park and resort in Nayagarh district, Odisha, involving alleged deforestation and encroachment of a waterbody without proper approvals.
