Central Tokyo has experienced 35 consecutive days of rainfall, marking the longest continuous rainy streak since records began in 1886. The rainfall began on August 27 and continued daily as of September 30, surpassing the previous record of 33 days set in 2019.
September rainfall in central Tokyo reached 629 millimeters by September 28, nearly three times the typical monthly average. This weather pattern is attributed to a combination of a stationary autumn rain front, intensified by approaching typhoons and low-pressure troughs. Meteorological officials noted that global climate drivers, including El Niño, are contributing to this abnormal weather pattern. A report from the Japan Meteorological Agency links these events in part to El Niño and prolonged high-pressure systems over the region.
