Bay of Bengal depression weakens, expanding rain threat across India and Nepal

A depression that crossed India’s east coast is weakening but expanding its rainfall footprint across India and into Nepal. The system, which brought heavy rain to Andhra Pradesh and Odisha with winds gusting up to 75 kilometers per hour, has moved inland.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange to red alerts for Chhattisgarh, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Telangana, with expectations of significant rainfall. Neighboring states including Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh are also forecast to receive rain.

Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, with potential for thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds. The rainfall increases the risk of flooding, waterlogging, landslides, and rising river levels in vulnerable areas.

Forecasts indicate that the wet spell could continue for several days, with some identifying September 26 as a potentially higher-risk period.
