Plastic and rubber litter discovered in remote Argentine deep-sea canyon

Plastic and rubber waste has been found in a remote deep-sea canyon off the coast of Argentina, according to a recent study. Researchers used a remotely operated vehicle to survey the Mar del Plata Submarine Canyon, located about 250 kilometers off Argentina’s coast.

Over 17 dives, the team observed 29 pieces of litter, primarily plastic and some rubber. Items included fishing gear, plastic bags and wrappers, a plastic cup, and a rubber boot. One plastic tissue-paper packaging was found at a depth of 3,814 meters. Researchers also noted marine organisms attached to the litter.
