Bali coral reefs degrading due to neglected root causes, study finds

New research indicates that Bali’s coral reefs are steadily degrading, despite ongoing rehabilitation efforts. A study published in Ocean & Coastal Management analyzed reef health data and stakeholder interviews in Sanur.

The findings suggest that coral restoration initiatives in the popular tourist destination often fail to address the fundamental drivers of coral decline, such as sediment runoff and wastewater discharge. Researchers identified complex and competing interests among various groups, including government agencies, community organizations, academics, fishers, and tourism operators, regarding coral reef preservation and the role of tourism.
