EU proposes new firefighting fleet after deadly summer heat wave

The European Commission is planning to develop a new European firefighting fleet of airplanes and a European Heatwave Plan. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the proposals following a summer marked by extreme heat across the European Union. The bloc experienced dried-up rivers, tens of thousands of additional deaths during heat waves, and widespread fires that forced evacuations.

Currently, the EU operates a small firefighting aircraft fleet and coordinates a network of resources across its 27 member states. This summer’s events, which impacted nearly every part of the continent, highlighted the need for new tools to address worsening climate instability, according to von der Leyen.
