Dhaka waste-to-energy project faces opposition from residents

Municipal authorities in Dhaka are planning a waste-to-energy project that would incinerate up to 3,0000 metric tons of trash daily to generate electricity. This project, intended to address the growing volume of municipal waste, is the first of its kind in Bangladesh.

However, nearby residents, who have long suffered from pollution from the Amin Bazar landfill, are raising concerns. They fear the project could exacerbate air quality issues, potentially releasing toxic substances like heavy metals and dioxins. The 42.5-megawatt North Dhaka project is owned by the China Machinery Engineering Corporation and is expected to be completed by December 2028.
