Researchers cataloging dragonflies in eastern Colombia’s Guainía region have identified nearly 120 species, significantly expanding the scientific record. This diversity suggests Guainía is a hotspot for these insects.
These dragonflies rely on healthy freshwater ecosystems, which are facing pressure from mining, deforestation, waste management issues, and expanding tourism. Workshops were held to share findings with local Indigenous communities. Participants helped identify dragonflies in their own languages, creating new terminology where scientific names were unfamiliar or nonexistent.
