African climate services require local integration and Indigenous knowledge, users report

Researchers interviewed 530 individuals involved in nature-based projects in Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar, and South Africa. The findings indicate that existing climate services frequently lack local relevance, timeliness, and accessibility.

Users expressed a need for improved forecasts that incorporate Indigenous knowledge, local languages, and practical data concerning land, water, and livelihoods. They also emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration and funding for co-produced climate information.

Over 80% of respondents identified limitations in current climate services, particularly the disconnect between Indigenous and local forecasting methods and formal climate services. Many found information difficult to access or outdated, with internet-based services being unsuitable in areas with poor connectivity or affordability issues.

The demand is for climate services that combine weather and seasonal forecasts with information on land, water, livelihoods, and local knowledge, tailored to specific communities. This requires time, resources, and incentives for scientists, providers, users, and local knowledge holders to develop these services collaboratively.
