The 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi issued a Declaration addressing climate issues, including clean technology and forests, and reaffirming commitment to the UNFCCC and Paris Agreement. The Declaration calls for “just, orderly, equitable, and inclusive energy transitions” with diversified energy sources and resilient value chains.
While acknowledging the continued role of fossil fuels, the summit highlighted BRICS nations’ growing adoption of clean technologies like solar energy and electric vehicles, positioning the bloc for a faster transition. The Declaration adopts plans for a BRICS photovoltaic industry working group, opens a workstream on low-emission hydrogen, and sets principles for smart grids and storage. It also commits to global value chain action plans to assist developing countries.
The Summit Declaration addressed barriers to climate action such as debt burdens, unequal governance of institutions, and climate funding gaps. The bloc also reiterated its objection to climate-linked trade measures, including carbon border adjustment mechanisms.
