Linguist Peggy Mohan believes India’s major written languages require a chance to express new ideas, particularly in science and technology. She argues that for languages to remain vital, they must participate in modern knowledge, including AI development.
Mohan suggests that current tech agendas in India are Western-centric. She proposes that India should build its AI around its multilingual identity, fostering communication between Indian languages rather than solely focusing on English translation. This approach, she contends, will prevent exclusion and allow creative individuals to contribute to national progress.
She also notes a growing demand from non-English readers for material in their native languages, a trend she believes will drive future changes in politics, technology, and education.
