Two Przewalski’s horse foals were born in a reintroduction center in central Kazakhstan in late August, representing the first wild births on Kazakh soil in over 200 years. The foals, both male, were born to different mares, with the same stallion as their father.
These births are considered a significant milestone for Kazakhstan’s reintroduction program, demonstrating the horses’ adaptation to the local climate and territory. The foals were born within an enclosure at the Alibi Wild Ungulates Reintroduction Center, part of the Altyn Dala State Nature Reserve. This reserve is also a recovery site for saiga antelopes and Asiatic wild asses. Przewalski’s horse, known locally as kertagy, is the only living wild relative of the domestic horse.
