Drought-prone Bundelkhand has experienced abundant rainfall this monsoon, leading to the devastation of kharif crops such as sesame, peanuts, and pulses. In Mahoba, rainfall was 76 per cent above normal, reaching 948 mm by September 8. Chitrakoot also recorded 76 per cent excess rainfall, with 1,202 mm.
Three districts in Uttar Pradesh’s Bundelkhand region — Banda, Chitrakoot, and Hamirpur — received over 1,000 mm of rain. This excessive precipitation has caused many of the region’s historic Chandel-era ponds to overflow, a sight not seen in a decade. While kharif crops suffered significant losses, the abundant water is expected to benefit the upcoming rabi crop season.
