Climate-related hazards such as floods, storms, and landslides pose increased risks for individuals with disabilities, a new study from Kerala, India, indicates. These events can render routes impassable and warnings inaccessible, deepening existing inequalities.
The research, published in Global Environmental Change, involved 72 interviews with people with disabilities, caregivers, and institutional stakeholders. It explored how individuals with disabilities experience and respond to climate change, highlighting that policies do not automatically dismantle on-the-ground barriers. The findings offer insights applicable to regions like sub-Saharan Africa and potentially beyond.
